Day 1 We start off early to the small Hindu Temple of Banteay Srei. It has fabulous carvings and is best seen from 7:30 to 9:00 before the big tour groups start arriving. We have time for a coffee or snack before continuing our tour. We have a short drive along the south of Koulen mountain to Kbal Spean and the 1000 Linga River. It is a steep climb through beautiful jungle to the upper river. The lingas on the riverbed were carved nearly 1000 years ago are unique in the world. The waters from the spring which feeds the Siem Reap River, wash over the lingas and cascade down to a lovely waterfall. Ancient carvings of Hindu deities and animals dress the stones and hundreds of brightly colored butterflies complete the scene. We have a late lunch at a beautiful semi open-air restaurant with views of the surrounding garden and hills. We continue to Koh Ker for an late afternoon visit and see sunset from the Prasat Thom the highest pyramid the Khmers ever built. We stay overnight at a small village guest house near Koh Ker .

Day 2 We have most of the morning to see this ancient city of Koh Ker. There are around 35 major temples spread over an area of 20sq Kms. Most of the temples are of brick, built over 1000 years ago. Some are in remarkable condition; others are in a picturesque state of ruin and cloaked in vegetation. It is a photographic wonder; especially in the rainy season. We drive south to Beng Mealea; where we have lunch and spend the rest of the afternoon exploring this exciting jungle ruin; which for many is the highlight of their trip to Cambodia. This tour is best done on the last day of your temple pass which is needed for Kbal Spean and Banteay Srei

The spectacular temple of Preah Vihear is set on the edge of a 1500ft cliff on the Dangrek Mountains on the Thai Border. Until 2003 this was only easily accessible on the Thai Side. A new road was built last October giving 4wd access from Cambodia. This trip is a fascinating journey on dirt roads through the Cambodian jungle. We pass through remote farming communities and visit some of the last strongholds of the Khmer Rouge. Preah Vihear achieved notoriety as it was the the stage for the final surrender of the Khmer Rouge in 1998. The area is still littered with land mines and shell holes. There is an old field gun still up there as a reminder of the war. New road links have now made access to this area a lot less hard. We drive through jungle and new settlements to the former Pol Pot stronghold of Anlong Veng. We stay overnight here after visiting the house of Tamok the Khmer Rouge Commander and the grave of Pol Pot in the hills above the small and now friendly town.
